Strolling around the neighbourhood - a Fotosafari

Petunia hosts a rather special kind of meme: it is almost without rules. You post what you see on your way; if and when you want to and then give her a notice. She keeps the blogroll. What rules there are can be found in her sidebar - the text is in Norwegian.

My contribution (the first time on this blog) is just one of my "daily" strolls around the neighbourhood and what I might spot on the way. As I have written elsewhere - when other people walk their dogs, I walk my cameras. Since it was Saturday my wife joined in too. Here follows a few sample of what we found:

It has been a fine day, but with the temperature around zero degrees C a bit of frosty haze in the air was only to be expected.

And of course some frost on the ground.

Such a carpet of frost often changes a well known subject into something totally different.

I even got a shot of a magpie squeezed between two telephone cables. Maybe it was creating its own network.

A picture of my nearest bridge and a walkway leading to it is a must

Since we live where three fjords meet there is always something happening on at least one of them.

Or on all three of them

Reflection on a University building

This is the new Service Building for the students at the University of Bergen (my old Alma Mater). It was opened last year and serves among others one of my children. The building it replaced was erected while I was a student. Either I am getting old, or the quality of the building process is not what it once was. Or both.

{Vintage Friday}: Juicy goes vintage!

not completely of course, don't worry ladies, the track suits are still there!
but I do love these vintage inspired dresses in their new collection, how cute is that strawberry print dress? I so want one!

Happy weekend everyone! It's going to be a cold one here (coldest in 13 years or something like that), so I'll be wrapped up in warm blankets (yes, plural!) and drinking hot chocolate... yum

{I Heart}: silver hearts

When it comes to jewellery, I have two contrasting loves, big fabulous colourful statement jewellery and simple silver necklaces, like a classic silver heart pendant, with it being quite close to Valentine's day, I'm finding myself draw to these simple yet so beautiful jewellery on Etsy:

top row: I&F Designs bottom left: lindesigns bottom right: phoebe's treasure

and while talking about siver hearts, how can I not mention the classic Tiffany hearts:

{all pendants from Tiffany & Co}

I have always loved the Return to Tiffany heart tag but when my boyfriend rang me from the airport last summer asking if I wanted anything from Tiffany's as our 2nd anniversary gift, I suppose I got greedy and though with all the VAT saved, maybe I should ask for the more expensive heart lock?

Don't get me wrong, I love this pendant and it certainly is my favorite but I didn't realise how chunky it is and it constantly turns slides everytime I move! Teach me a lession for being greedy I suppose! :) don't worry heart tag, I will get you one day!

do you have a favorite heart necklace? or maybe hearts are not quite your thing? love to hear what you think!

Sky Watch Friday # 43

Oslo Plaza (officially Radisson SAS Plaza Hotel) is situated in Oslo city centre. 117 metres high, it is Northern Europe's tallest and Norway's largest hotel, and the tallest building in Norway.

Hoisting Sky Watch Friday

You have to take your subjects where you can find them. For instance can a crane make an interesting pattern against the sky. In this case, right after sunrise in January.
First - the whole crane

Second - a bit closer and another angle

Third - a close-up for the technical interested

PS Please visit Sky Watch Friday's own site for more.

The Old Town Fredrikstad

creams, beige & a little bit of shabby chic

Colours are fabulous, but sometimes creams and beige can be gorgeous too. I'm loving these interiors from Town and Country Style, the cracked paints on the wall just adds that little bit of shabby chic magic.

What's your opinion on creams & beige?

Colour or black and white?

The pros and cons of pictures in colour versus black and white is a popular theme for discussions among amateur photographers. Some seem to think that if you just remove the colours you get a picture with more "feeling" or that removing colours from an ordinary drab photo "will save it". In my humble opinion you need to have that option in mind when you take the picture. Black and white enhances the structures in the photo, so you have to have some structure there from the beginning. Here are three examples of the same subject in both colour and black and white. The subject is a bench beneath a balustrade in the Botanical Garden at the University of Bergen. The pictures were taken last Sunday and were shot from different angles and distances. To me they work in both modes since there are lot of structures an colours, but they might convey different atmospheres. Comments are very welcome - that's the way I learn.

Being in the audience to watch the mind blowing Chanel Paris-Moscou fashion show! Can you imagine what it would be like to watch this live?

these gorgeous fairytale-like outfits also reminds me of the wonderful office of daniela kamiliotis, it would be amazing if I could visit her office in person! I'd happily spend days there.

Stay tuned for new Beauty Tried & Tested posts coming soon to Tuesdays, think I'll name it {Beauty Tuesdays}, simple and gets the message across right? ;)

B is for Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson

Whom did I say it was? Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson is a household name in Norway, but today he is virtually unknown abroad, despite being a Nobel Laureate in literature in 1903. He was one of the four "great ones" in Norwegian literature in the 19th century. One of the others was the more famous Henrik Ibsen, with whom he was a classmate for a period and whom he knew very well. Wikipedia describes his lifespan shortly like this:
Bjørnstjerne Martinus Bjørnson (December 8, 1832April 26, 1910) was a Norwegian writer and the 1903 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate. Bjørnson is considered as one of "The Great Four" Norwegian writers; the others being Henrik Ibsen, Jonas Lie, and Alexander Kielland. Bjørnson is celebrated for his lyrics to the Norwegian National Anthem, "Ja, vi elsker dette landet".

In his earliest period, "Bjørnson was anxious "to create a new saga in the light of the peasant," as he put it, and he thought this should be done, not merely in prose fiction, but in national dramas or folke-stykker. "

"At the close of 1857 Bjørnson had been appointed director of the theater at Bergen, a post which he held for two years, when he returned to Christiania (now Oslo)." The pictures accompanying this post shows a statue that was raised in his honour outside the theatre "Den Nasjonale Scene" in Bergen. The statue was made by the famous Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland and was unveiled 1n 1917.

From 1860 to 1863 he traveled widely throughout Europe. Early in 1865 he undertook the management of the Christiania theatre, and brought out his popular comedy of De Nygifte (The Newly Married) and his romantic tragedy of Mary Stuart in Scotland. In 1870 he published Poems and Songs and the epic cycle Arnljot Gelline; the latter volume contains the ode Bergliot, one of Bjørnson's finest contributions to lyrical poetry."

He lived for long periods outside Norway, and his literary career had its many ups and downs, but he managed over time to become Norway's "National Poet". He produced novels, plays and poems of both romantic and realistic character.

He was also a staunch defender of liberty, of human rights and the rights of every nation to rule themselves. He believed in a form of "Scandinaviaism" in his youth, but was one of the most staunch proponents for an independent Norway from Sweden when that became an issue at the end of the 19thy century.

Wikipedia concludes like this:

Bjørnson was, from the beginning of the Dreyfus Affair, a staunch supporter of Alfred Dreyfus, and, according to a contemporary, wrote "article after article in the papers and proclaimed in every manner his belief in his innocence".

Bjørnson was one of the original members of the Nobel Committee, and was re-elected in 1900. In 1903 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Bjørnson had done as much as any other man to rouse Norwegian national feeling, but in 1903, on the verge of the rupture between Norway and Sweden, he preached conciliation and moderation to the Norwegians.

He died on April 26, 1910 in Paris, where for some years he had spent his winters, and was buried at home with every mark of honor. The Norwegian coastal defence ship HNoMS Norge was sent to convey his remains back to his own land.

But to all Norwegians, he will be remembered as the man who wrote the words to our National Anthem, "Ja, vi elsker dette landet" (here sung by Sissel Kyrkjebø and The Mormon Tabernacle Choir).

{Dear Diary}: My very late New Year Resolution list!

this is my very late New Year Resolution list, my argument is Chinese New Year is like today so if I go by this then my resolution list is actually quite early ;)

This year, all things on my list are things I want to achieve by the end of this year, most should be quite practical too...

{wallpaper image from Benefit Cosmetics}

1. graduate from uni - hoping it would be a 1st Class too! Our graduation ceremony will take place in the famous Bath Abbey, which despite the fact I have lived in Bath for more than 3 years, I have never been inside the Abbey so I'm hopeing it would be a nice surprice!

{Bath Abbey via amigadave}

2. start the Women into Enterprise course - I recently discovered there is this amazing training program running in Bath, helping women to set up their own businesses & it's free for students! The course starts next week so I'm very excited!

3. & 4. I'd love to improve my photography skills, at the moment I just take pictures with a simple click & adjust the lighting using my limited Photoshop skills. Since I might be leaving in Bath this summer, I've decided to explore more of Bath and capture places with my newly improved photography skills! So I am calling on all photographers, I'd love to know how you picked up photography, was it a training course? a book? Any info you can give would be greatly appreciated!

5. well, it's just I'm a bit bored with my current style at the moment, I tend to buy a lot of basics, lots cardigans, all plain coloured. While basics are important, I would like to add a bit of excitment into my wardrobe and mix with my current basics. I'd love to be more edgy & adores the relaxed chic style, I am also really loving this girl's style:

{Woori Go via lookbook}

What does all these mean for this blog? Here are some changes you can expect, hopefully good changes! I kept a diary when I was quite young but somehow grown out of it, so I'd like to start an electronic one, and don't worry I won't share any of my maths related topics! ;)

Happy (Chinese) New Year and a solar eclipse

It's the Chinese New Year - and it's the year of the Ox! It is also the day of an annular eclipse when the moon (moving to new moon) puts itself directly in the path of the sun and the earth covers part of the sun's surface. It struck me as intriguing then, as peering at the sun through the lens of a welding helmet, the sun look exactly like a set of ox horns! Synchronicity or coincidence...

Solar eclipse of 26 January 2009 approx 08h10
(thank goodness for the cloud cover making these shots possible)

An article I read this morning said:
"Any eclipse signals a time to be wary and this is especially true if the sun is involved because all living beings are dependent on the sun for light... During the eclipse, the power of negative energy increases 1,000 times as compared to other times... People are advised not to carry out activities as usual during the eclipse period as they may behave irrationally... After the eclipse, people should wash and clean their houses to remove all “harmful energies” that would have set in and offer prayers."

I suppose it's a good thing I'm having the house scraped and painted at the moment!

That said, it was so curious, I could feel the eclipse as it began - there was a very distinct shift in energy - from summery and light to something heavier and oppressive. The dog next door started howling. A guinea fowl took off to the top of the tree where he sat and hecked for the entire duration of the eclipse - about six minutes. And every dog in the neighbourhood barked incessantly. There is something unquestionably eerie about solar eclipses and I recall viewing the full solar eclipse in 1999 when I was visiting friends in Guernsey. Everything fell utterly silent as the moon blocked out the light of the sun and darkness fell over the island. It was as though the world was coming to an end.

Solar eclipse, images shot through lens of welding helmet - eerie or what...

Coming back to the Chinese New Year, it's intriguing that Barack Obama is an Ox - I wonder if there's some special significance? Mind you, I too am an Ox (and a Taurus - so it's a double load of bull...)

Apparently the Year of the Earth Ox evokes stability and dependability. One of the predictions for the year of the Ox reads as follows:
"The Ox is a practical work animal, while the Earth element is steady and firm. Together, they create a kind of plodding energy that can be exasperating. Still, progress will be made in 2009; it will occur in slow, barely perceptible increments. If you stay patient and keep your nose to the grindstone, you will make the most of this ponderous energy.
It is said that Oxen place great emphasis on authority and tradition. Therefore, 2009 will lay an especially heavy burden on world leaders. Government officials, CEOs and community organizers will be expected to correct society's ills. If they slack off, they'll be thrown by the wayside. Substance is always favored over style in the Year of the Ox."

My own Chinese horoscope prediction says that this is a year in which I am invited to reach for the stars. Love, luck and money are headed my way. And my personal life will be particularly rewarding. And I'll enjoy exuberant good health! Oh goodie! It also says it's a good year to go on an extended vacation - which is just as well - but I'll tell you more about that in another post!

Anyway, now you know. So, here's wishing you a very happy and prosperous Chinese New Year!
